Dear Brenda, I realize we go to a school filled with very smart kids, and it's not strange for so many people to do well. However, there are classes where I feel like I'm the ONLY one confused. When teachers ask if we have questions, there are times when nobody raises their hand. In turn, im too scared to ask. It honestly makes me feel stupid. Also, I never thought a B+ was a bad grade on a test before coming to hsas, but now it's a grade i fear. In a school where it seems like almost everyone is doing well, how do I handle the pressure? --Stressed Student Dear Stressed Student, In my experience, a key to success is to stop comparing yourself to others. It’s also valuable to know that some people are better at covering up their confusion in class. Also, you’ll soon learn that many students lie about their grades and study habits. I can’t tell you how many times i’ve heard “I didn’t study!.” At hsas, 9/10 times this is a total lie. I’ve also noticed that when it comes to tests, the people who finish in ten minutes or walk out talking about how ridiculously easy the test was are usually the kids who aren’t doing that well. My point is, you’re likely on the same level as everyone else. Just try your best and get a tutor if you really have to. Some upperclassmen will even help you for free out of the kindness of their heart. Good luck! 2. Hi Brenda, I can't admit to anyone, not even my family, but I think I like our president. The entire school hated him when he got elected, people even cried. I think he has a lot of great ideas and wants to change our country for the better; people don't let him do his job and laugh at him when he can't express himself effectively. How do I come clean to my ultra-liberal friends and family without being ridiculed? --Trump Non-Hater Dear Trump Non-hater, Sounds like you have got yourself in a pickle. What you need to remember is that true friends won’t think less of you for your political beliefs. If you find that your friends won’t accept you for who you are, seek out the few Republicans at HSAS. It may seem that none exist, but they’re probably also cowering from their more liberal counterparts. One final piece of advice to remember is that nobody likes a pushy Republican or Democrat. It’s fine to be passionate about your beliefs, but it’s not okay to antagonize your fellow classmates with your harangues on Obamacare. 3. Hey Brenda, I'm a hottie. Trust me, I have great judgement. Yet, I haven't found a boo. It's like, why can't i be scooped? Is it just me, or are most of the boys at our school disinterested in romance? It seems like all the hot boys at our school get high so frequently that they've lost their sex drive. Please help... I need me a mans. --Chewing gum Queen Bernstien Dear Chewing gum Queen Bernstien, I feel you, girl. I do often notice that the boys in our school aren’t very romantic and are inexperienced when it comes to forming real relationships. On the other hand, maybe it’s you. Are you looking in the right places? Are you looking too hard? Let things happen naturally and try befriending a nice guy in your class that you have something in common with. For example, if you see a guy wearing a shirt with a band you like on it, talk to him! You could also try being more social. You may connect with someone at club meetings or if you’re on similar sports teams. Instead of only worrying about how hot the boy is, focus on trying to build a close relationship with him. Unfortunately, a lot of the guys at our school are either focused only on quick hook-ups or themselves. Maybe, try seeking out a person outside of school? After all, if you know our small community inside and out, it might be worth it to try looking outside of it. If you’re in any extracurricular programs with other hotties, try searching for a lover there. Remember to always give people a chance. You never know who may end up being the perfect guy for you. I wish you the best of luck! 4. Why do girls run away? --Anonymous Dear Anonymous, Oof, this is a toughy. Maybe if I knew the answer, I wouldn’t be so lonely. Whatever, the coach doesn’t have to play. Sometimes, girls just aren’t that into you and there’s nothing you can do about it. Or maybe she’s playing for the other team (if you know what I mean.) You have to look at your appearance and personality objectively. There’s an article coming out in this edition of the Hallway Herald that I recommend you read. It’s about how intelligence isn’t the only factor going into a successful life. A lot of the students at HSAS seem to think they can just rely on their smarts and act like a jerk, but everyone will still love them. I’ve got news for you buddy, you’re just being a jerk; you’re no Bill Gates, at least he has a better personality than you and loads of cash. Yeah, I’m talking to you --- ---. Do you take care of your personal hygiene as much as you should? Do you dress like a stuffy old grandpa? While you’re free to go against societal conventions, keep in mind that your options will become more limited. Dwell on these questions for a while and maybe you’ll find your answer. 5. Dear Brenda, Before I rant about my situation, I would like to thank you for doing the whole school such a big favour by answering all of these questions. Now allow me to describe my situation. I have a massive crush on a boy who attends our school, I'll call him Chad. One of those crushes that give you butterflies when you look at them. I can't get Chad off my mind. This is problematic because I have a girlfriend. I like her, but I can't shake the feeling I'd be happier with Chad. What do you suggest I do? (I know Chad is bisexual, but I don't know whether or not he has feelings towards me.) --Bisexual Male Dear Bisexual Male, You are in a really tough situation. Take the next few days to let things calm down and think about what you really want. It’s hard for me to tell you what to do-- and ultimately, remember you should always do what you feel is right-- but I will tell you because I’m Brenda. You should dump the girlfriend. That sounds harsh, but it’s unfair to both you and your girlfriend, who deserves to know the truth about your sexuality. Of course, it’s completely normal to be confused about your relationship. But, if you think you’d be happier with someone else, it most likely means you’re not that into your girlfriend, and the relationship will just fizzle out. When you’re ready, go for Chad! You want to start things slowly, after all, you just got out of relationship. First, you should become better friends with him and maybe suggest hanging out after school one day. After some time, if you feel like he may also share romantic feelings, be brave and ask him out. Remember, boys and girls are more alike than you think! I know rejection is scary but it’s a lot scarier to go through life wondering what could’ve been. You can do it!
